Autofonction
Jean-Charles de Quillacq
16.05.2020 - 25.07.2020
The words in this text — that we wrote right before the lockdown in France — accompany our very gestures as we handle and move Jean-Charles de Quillacq's works in preparation for the show. Autofonction (auto-function) is not only a closed system that his sculptures favour any more. It has now become a shared system, forced upon us by our collective consciousness, for the last fifty-five days.
Auto-function overflows with energy. It activates, it works, it rises up, it gathers, it struts about. It is also a bit arched, it feels the air, it catches things that remain foreign and wants to keep them, to feel them wiggle with muffled noises. When meaning dances, objects do too. They are alive and find their way in space, they live on its light and its darkness. They glow, they mattify and lie down like the oxalis triangularis — this false crimson shamrock, whose leaves close without the presence of a witness.
